I like the first environment. Ithink i would be really neat to have your character on the roofs.
I think, though, that you could make it a little more dynamic. Reemberthat the real star of the environment piece should be the environment, not the character. So make the rooftops have a lot of fun angles and exaggerate them a bit. I have seen a lot of pictures of villages in Japan and other pats of Asia tha have really dynamic and intresting rooftops.

Also, don't skimp on the backgound elements. Let's se sme dramatic mountains and trees!

One more thing: spend some time doing visual reearch for ideas. Don't just go with the first images you find!
