Colored Character

Hyo, I thought you were going to be in class next week, so I would be able to comment directly on your piece, since I didn't get to see the environment until rather late. But you weren't! Are you feeling okay? I'm going to talk about both your environment and character here.

A summary of comments:
- The locations look generic "East Asian" - more research and sketches are needed
- Make the bo/gun longer and more elaborate.
- Reduce the amount of colors to "fit" with the style of the game and reference (i.e. Korean clothing)
- Nice hat!
- I'm not sure what his feet are doing...Are they socks? Boots? Try to make them more distinctive
- Don't forget material callouts

Scroll further if you want more detailed comments on the above list.

About the environment:
It looks like the details that you indicated are very lightly drafted, so I can't tell what's going on. But from what I can see, the locations look sort of generic "East Asian" settings. Try looking at the architecture of countries like Thailand or Cambodia or Bangladesh, or other countries on the Asian continent. Last class Sean brought this really nice book with photos of Angkor Wat.

If you're set on your character being from a Korean-like place, note what distinguishes Korea's building from, say, ancient Chinese architecture (i.e. knots and cross patternings, materials, colors, etc etc). Look for unique design elements in stuff like celadon ware. I think you should go through more thumbnails before trying to solidfy an environment.

About the character:
His bo/gun should be longer. More is often better in video games. Maybe a pattern could be carved on it, or it's got knobs every few inches on it, or something. Go nuts. Naruto isn't all that practical anyway. (Ninja with an orange jacket!)

Now, this is going to sound like I'm contradicting myself, but I also think you should stick to just a few colors. In the game you've chosen, many characters have a distinctive sort of color associated with him/her. Traditional Korean clothing usually had large fields of color; sometimes one part (shirt or pants/skirt) had a single-color pattern or design element. The headgear is much more fun, though. Koreans had awesome hats.

I'm confused as to the material of his clothing, and his feet seem rather undefined. If they're boots, there should be soles so he doesn't wear the fabric/leather/etc through. Also, the shoes are very generic; perhaps you could have explored that more. Don't forget material callouts.

This is looking good Hyo. Here are a few comments:

- I think his face seems a little off as far as anatomy, maybe have a friend pose in that position so you can get the facial features in the right place? They just seem a little "squished" right now. It also seems somewhat generic, perhaps he should have some sort of distinguishing feature, like a beard, or a scar or tattoo or something. If not, then perhaps the headband he is wearing could be thicker, and the little clasp or brooch thingy on the front could be bigger or fancier?

I also think the bo needs to be thicker. Maybe it is carved with symbols?

Good work Hyo, keep it up!

- I like the colors, but don't forget about adding another darker tone for shading.
