LOZ Phantom Hourglass Character/Environment

(I tried to design the outside of the island/dungeon, but I can do an interior boss chamber as well, if anyone would rather see that.)

A summary of comments:
- Manta ray head is cool, I'm a little lost as to how the head is formed in the front
- Brighter colors
- Environment looks a little cramped. Is that the feeling you want from it?
- What's the cave's "face" made of?
- You could draw the island *and* peek into the character's house/dungeon.
- Landscaping details? Rocks or flora or both? More fish?

Scroll further if you want more detailed comments on the above list.

About the character:
Hm, I think your character is much more interesting that what I last saw (and remember). I like his piercings and manta ray head with eye tattoos on them. That is his head, right? Since you have a huge black line on the front view, I'm unsure whether that's a part of the character, or just a cool hat. (It looks more clarified in the back, but I'd like to see how it resolves in the front.)

I think the colors should be brighter. Because of the game's style, I think this is the perfect opportunity to try some digitial coloring. With digital coloring, it'll be bright and flat, and you can switch colors rather easily. John (who's doing WW) used illustrator to lay out his colors, maybe that'll work for you. If you want to use WC (or is that gouache?) make sure to build up more color in the piece. I know watercolor is perfectly capable of producing great colors.

Nitpicky detail: I think his feet should be a little bigger. But his shape is interesting, more so than your first iterations of the character.

About the environment:

Is that rock structure in the center the island itself? I remember you said you wanted the character to come from a new, underwater island. I think there needs to be more surface on which he can traverse. Maybe it's just me, but I think the area looks rather cramped. Scale reference will help.

Is that a huge shell on top, that's make the facial object on the stone? Or is it just a natural rock formation? I'm not quite sure of what the object is made. Since there are those stalactite/stalagmites that form a cave/tunnel with gaps, we can see inside where (I'm assuming) your character hang out. So how about drawing both the island and a hint of the boss' chamber/house? Remember that whatever things he has, they have to be able to stay solidly on the ground (i.e., be heavy enough). You could also switch that so we get a view of the island from inside the house.

And are there any local aquatic flora nearby? It looks pretty desolate, and rarely are there locations underwater like that. Adding other rock formations, if you want it to be a more deserted area, might help.

Another nitpicky: When you do a final environment, I think you should add more fish in the background. Just a thought.

Erin-

Great work on the character! He is far more interesting now andI love his shape. His legs might be a little small (imagine what he woudl look like if he was walkng, probably not very menacing, right?) but that's something you can easily play around with in Photoshop.

I really like the built-in weapons he has on the back of his arms. Maybe lets see an action hot of him putting them to good use?

The environment is also very cool. I think you could define the materials a little better, maybe the whole structure is made out of coral? Or if it is carved stone, it could have patches of coral covering it. The ground around the base definitely needs more "underwater foliage".

Great stuff! Can't wait to see the color!
