Ah, markers! When I look at your work, it makes me wish I still used them. Your linework is really lovely. I think if you had brought some of the same kind of rendering with the pen as you did with the one with him and the cow, your robot would seem more metallic? He seems a little matte in the colored piece compared to the pen sketches you have of him. Going to sound like a manga nerd, but do you real Dogs: Bullets and Carnage or Battle Angel Alita? When I actually feel brave enough to do some not!coloring book inking, I really love looking at Miwa Shirow. Maximo V. Lorenzo (speedking on DA) is also pretty cool for inks.
I can see that you were trying to create atmosphere by pushing some parts back with that light blue added on PS, but I don't think the media blended very well. It looks a little too airbrushed because there's a halo of white around the characters like you didn't want to get to close.
The hand gestures are a nice touch-- Since it must have been hard to think of how to give your character facial studies, I think that they give off your character's personality rather well.
I love the energy and power your character has. Sometimes it is fun to design characters who are all about punching!
I think you need to work on really showing that power in his poses though. Right now, I think the most successful pose is the bottom one, where it really seems like he is winding up for a big impact. The color piece seems too non-chalant, like the punch is almost an after-thought. That COULD work, but i think for the main color image, we should really see the thrust of his whole body going into the impact.
I think the color is applied really well, and his design feels really nice and iconic.
I am still having trouble with the position of the fist in the color version. It seems like his fist is turned all the way around and does not feel natural. When in doubt, have someone pose for you!
Cait O, I've read Dogs back when it was only 12 chapters and I see Maximo on the Void chats once in a while. Only saw a few pages of Alita- and one rented VHS tape. I loved how kinetic the works were and Im currently trying to find a good way to make complete inks that color well.
Sean- THanks for the advice, but everytime I punch I have a tendency to twist my arm so I'm gonna take a guess and say that my way of punching things isn't too natural- this was a fun assignment, shame that I didn't ink the cow picture since I'm now feeling partial to it.....
