Homework for 9/15/2009

Hiya guys! Email Sean if you have any suggestions for field trips. The two big ideas are the Renfair and Washington D.C.

The homework for next week is to design a comic book character based on the interesting objects we used in class. Along with your interesting object, bring in 10+ different approaches, in black and white, of a character that would feature in a sequential work. Some things Sean suggested last class, to keep in mind:
  • Think about what works well in a sequence. Imagine the flow of panels or if the character was to be animated.
  • Simplicity is often more efficient, and an interesting silhouette is more important than detail. The "camera" of a comic will zoom in and pan out, so the character must be recognizable with minimal detail; s/he has to be "read" at variable sizes, from thumbnail to close-up. But that doesn't mean the character can't have fun accessories or details. Just remember to keep the essence of the character intact.
  • Remember what the character will look like at various angles (i.e. the side view); the character won't be seen from the front all the time.
  • There is a difference in style and design. Characters can have the same design (i.e. same clothes, certain hairstyle) but s/he executed in different styles (i.e. painterly vs. linework).
In addition to the above, keep your bogeyman thumbnails somewhere safe. They'll come into play later. Scan three thumbnails and post them on the blog - one is the thumb Sean checked; the other two are your choices. I guess 72 DPI is fine enough, really.

...Okay, so did that all make sense? Yeah? Yeah!
