Step 01: Pencil drawing. I work with pretty tight pencil drawings because they will be my guide for the entire piece throughout the process.

Step 02: Scan the drawing into Photoshop as a black and white image (no color). Your image will start off as the "Background layer". Duplicate the background layer. Now erase the original background layer so that it is white.

Step 03: Go to the "Channels" tab and then "Control-select" or "Apple-Select" (I think...I'm a PC guy) for Macs.

Step 04: Now go back to the "Layers" tab. Make a new layer over the old Background-Copy layer. Label it something like "Drawing" or "Line". No go to "Select > Inverse. Now choose black as your backgrounhd color in the picker. Now hit Control-Backspace (or delete), or whatever the keys are for "Fill" on a Mac.
